Starting childcare can feel like a big step. Discover simple ways to make the transition calm, positive and reassuring for your child.

Starting childcare is a big milestone for both children and parents. A new environment, unfamiliar faces and a different daily routine can take some time to get used to. With preparation, patience and plenty of reassurance, you can help your child make the transition with greater confidence.

Talk About Childcare Positively

Before your child's first day, talk about childcare in a calm and positive way. Explain what they can expect, such as playing with other children, meeting educators, eating meals and enjoying activities.

Keep conversations simple and age-appropriate, and give your child opportunities to ask questions or share their feelings.

Visit Before Their First Day

If possible, visit the childcare centre together before your child's first day. Familiarising them with the environment, educators and play areas can make the setting feel less unfamiliar.

A few short visits can help your child recognise the people and surroundings when they eventually begin their regular routine.

Practise Small Changes at Home

Gradually introduce parts of the childcare routine at home. Practising getting dressed, eating independently, packing a bag or following a simple morning routine can help your child feel more prepared.

Try to keep mornings calm and predictable so your child knows what to expect.

Bring a Familiar Comfort Item

Depending on your childcare centre's policies, a favourite soft toy, small comfort item or family photo may help your child feel connected to home during the early days.

Expect Some Big Feelings

It is completely normal for children to experience excitement, nervousness or sadness when starting childcare. Tears at drop-off do not necessarily mean your child is unhappy with childcare.

Offer a calm goodbye, reassure your child that you will return, and allow educators to support them as they settle into the day.

Give Them Time

Every child adjusts differently. Some children settle quickly, while others need more time and reassurance. By working closely with educators and maintaining consistent routines at home, you can help your child build a sense of security and confidence.

With patience, preparation and positive support, starting childcare can become an exciting new chapter in your child's development.
